The Triumph Spitfire was originally devised by Standard-Triumph to compete in the small sports car market which had opened up with the introduction of the Austin-Healey Sprite. Triumphs idea was to use the mechanicals from their small saloon the Herald to underpin the new project. Triumph had one advantage however; where the Austin A30 range was of unitary construction the Herald featured a separate chassis. It was Triumphs intention to cut that chassis down and clothe it in a sports body saving the costs of developing a completely new chassis / body unit. Italian designer Michelotti-who had already penned the Herald-was commissioned for the new project and came up with a traditional swooping body. Wind-up windows were provided (in contrast to the Sprite/Midget which still featured side screens at that time) as well as a single-piece front end which tilted forwards to offer unrivalled access to the engine. This little 1964 Triumph Spitfire is an 83000 original mile car that has had only two owners in the last 22 years. The car has gone through an older restoration back in the 90s. We have recently gone through the brake system replacing the lines as well as the master cylinder and had the calipers rebuilt. For years the car was driven 3 days or more a week up to 2004 when the previous owner sold it to the gentleman we are currently selling the car for. The paint on the car is older but still in very good condition. There are no major blemishes to the body or removable hardtop. The factory steel hardtops for these cars are very rare and hard to find. The white soft top does show some staining and discoloration. The hardtop is in very good condition with no major imperfections as well. Both front and rear bumpers look great with only minor scratching and fading. Overall they show very well. There has been a period AMCO chrome luggage rack installed on the truck that looks great. Inside the seats have been reupholstered and look great. The seats are vinyl with cloth inserts and white piping. No major wear is showing on either seat. The carpet is newer as well and in good condition with no rips or tears. Dash wood door panels and hardtop headliner are all equally as nice. Lights blinkers gauges and horn all work with no problems. Under the hood the motor is said to be the original for the car and runs great. Turn the key and it fires right up with no smoking. The twin SU carbs look great and operate as they should. The entire front bonnet lifts up and out of the way to make working on this little Triumph extremely easy. Options under the hood include an aluminum alloy valve cover chrome dashpot covers on the SU carbs chrome Weiland air filters and a Lucas sport coil. This is a great driving little Spitfire that is a joy to drive. These little cars are rarely seen with most being overshadowed by the larger (and more expensive) TRs. You are sure to get just as much pleasure in driving these little Spitfires as you would driving its bigger brother that sell for twice the price of the Spitfires.
