Honda has been one of the largest manufacturer of motorcycles since 1959 and on the largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines. Honda produce more than 14 million internal combustion engines each year. Honda overtook Nissan in 2001 to become the Japanese carmaker's second largest. In August 2008, Honda surpassed Chrysler as the automaker's fourth-largest in the United States. Honda is the largest automaker in sixth in the world.
Honda was the first Japanese automaker to launch a dedicated luxury brand, Acura, in 1986. Apart from its core car and motorcycle companies, Honda also makes garden equipment, marine engines, personal watercraft and generators, among others. Since 1986, Honda has been involved with artificial intelligence and robotics research and launched its ASIMO robot in 2000. They have also ventured into aviation with the establishment of GE Honda Aero Engines in 2004 and Honda HA-420 HondaJet, scheduled for launch in 2011. Honda spends about 5% of its revenues in R & D.
